The LGBT Community: The Reality

Based on the newscasts nowadays, gender inequality issues arise as the people in the world try to compete in the globalization. Ironic as it is, we tend to still learn the things that somehow we have already unlearned before. People still managed to maintain their view towards this kind of people. The effects of education and mass media, however, also did a very great job in lessening the effects of this discrimination.

What are the discriminations that this people still undergo? Can we lessen the effects of such things?

The LGBT community still experience discrimination not only in schools, but also in work places. Even though they have very good performances in their works, they still experience the discrimination. These discriminations were in the form of physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. It is physical in the sense that some people exert some force when doing such things (i.e. pulling one’s hair, grabbing the arms, etc.) Some people also have a habit of saying bad words to some people that leads them to their misfortunes. Unfortunately, verbal and emotional abuse gives more impact than the physical abuse. As the saying goes, “Mas madaling maghilom ang sugat ng katawan kaysa sa sugat ng puso.” The effects of these verbal and emotional abuses tend to stay longer than those of physical exploitation. This could lead them to lose their self-confidence, happiness, and this could make them attempt suicide.

On the other hand, some organizations were formed to protect the welfare of this people. In the Philippines, Ang Ladlad pushes the equality among the people in the society. Their argument states that we are born equal in the eyes of God, so why some people cannot say that we are also equal in the eyes of the law. Unluckily, this organization cannot represent the LGBT in the congress because the COMELEC does not give them the permission to run during elections, yet still, they managed to do their job no matter what.

I guess that in the future this discrimination will be abandoned and the world will live happily ever after. Well, I guess I am just being too realistic.
